Paradoxically fire appears to be essential to the life cycle of some plants and forests. Nature has been starting fires for as long as there have been trees. Research is revealing how some plant seeds depend on smoke and sometimes heat from fires for them to germinate. As a recurring theme, birth and death are further pronounced by illumination and the void within the work, symbolic of new life underground waiting to replace the old, and the necessary fire that links death and birth in a single instance as part of an ecosystem.
